Our School's Philosophy -
Tae
Kwon Do is about the journey not the destination.
Tae Kwon Do is first and foremost a form of self-defense. The guiding principle of the art is that the practitioner should not attack, unless
first confronted by an attack. If possible talk your way out of a confrontation. Additionally, Tae Kwon Do is designed to make the student non-violent, to develop a positive outlook and a
feeling of confidence. Through the study of this art, students will soon learn to understand themselves better as well as their aggressor, in the
process overcoming the fear that naturally develops in a confrontation. By mastering techniques taught for self-defense, one becomes better
equipped to handle an attacker. Confident and free of fear, a Tae Kwon Do student is better able to control the attacker, using only the amount
of force necessary. Further study of the art will instill in the student integrity and respect. The first thing taught in the
dojang is the bow to show respect for the teacher, fellow students, and flags. While preserving their unique individuality, the student will become a more
well-rounded person. Being educated in Tae Kwon Do with the more traditional approach, implies that students will learn to contribute to
society, treat the environment with respect, looking up to their seniors, as well as having compassion for their juniors - all in all, striving to
become a more disciplined, focused, and peaceful individual.
Who should take Tae Kwon Do? (Everyone!)
Different people have found their Tae Kwon
Do training exhilarating for a variety of reasons. Many students come to classes simply because
they enjoy the discipline, the companionship of others training as they do - not to mention relief from the pressures of daily life. Classes can
become the highlight of one's day. Tae Kwon Do appeals to people of all ages, skills, and interests. One may have failed at a variety of
contests or sports only to succeed magnificently in Tae Kwon Do. No level of physical strength or flexibility is required as a prerequisite for
starting in a class. Tae Kwon Do can be a great vehicle toward improved health. Students
will experience noticeable cardiovascular improvements, upper and lower body strength,
reduction of weight, firming up of the body, reduction of stress, overall limbering and great
excitement from practicing a wide variety of dynamic exercise. Men, women, and children
practice and learn together in a cooperative and non-competitive atmosphere. Students are encouraged to progress at their own pace
according to differences in skills, ability, and interest. Tae Kwon Do is generally thought of as fighting techniques; however those who study this art find it is more about defending yourself.
Through training, your physical development, mental discipline, mastery of concentration,
breath control, reflex refinement, determination, focus and centering will blossom infinitely.
These benefits can be found in men and women of all ages and ability and should not be
the domain of the young and athletic.
